Arsene Wenger rung the changes in his Arsenal side, with Sol Campbell returning in defence at the expense of Martin Keown and Jeremie Aliadiere being preferred up front instead of Sylvain Wiltord.
But Liverpool went ahead in the 13th minute when Kewell volleyed John-Arne Riise's cross into the net for his first goal at Anfield since his summer move from Leeds United.
Gerard Houllier's side poured forward and Kewell missed a chance to double the lead while Michael Owen put both a lob and header over the bar.
The Reds the price for not finding the second goal when Pires's 31st minute free-kick was deflected on to Hyypia by Edu and into the net for the equaliser.
Arsenal went ahead after the interval as Pires curled a superb shot into the top corner. Four minutes later Owen hobbled off with a shin injury.
Arsenal’s 'Invincibles' went on to win the Barclays Premier League after remaining unbeaten all season, while Liverpool finished fourth.
